  28.04.05 Thursday
Two satellite images from the Salt Lake City area. On the zoom view the campus is illustrated, whereas the more global view shows some parts of the Wasatch front, which inherits a lot of nice passes to bike.
  30.04.05
  03.05.05
Scenes from the top of the hill right next of my flat.
  08.05.05
Industrial fans to dry out our water damage.
  09.05.05 Sunday
Bike trip to City Creek Canyon

  11.05.05
Again snow in the Salt Lake valley. The ski resorts benefit from the ongoing bad weather, since there are more than 10 inches of fresh snow.
  12.05.05
The university hospital and my new license plates.
  13.05.05
'This is the place' heritage park right behind the office building. This was the original entrance point for the mormon pinoeers in the 1840s. Always a nice opportunity for a walk during lunch time. The national pony express monument is one of the mayor sights.
  14.05.05
Good weather again, time for further sports activities. Bike trip up the Milcreek Canyon, close to Mt. Olympus (at least as far as the snow on the upper road allows).

  15.05.05
Trip to the so called Great Salt Lake. There is lot of untouched wetland at the shore area, home for various animals.
  17.05.05
Trip to Grand Canyon NP, Bryce Canon NP and Zions NP
  20.05.05
The first day of our trip takes us to Zyon NP, after a nearly 5 hours drive from Salt Lake. In the park we did various short hikes along the Virgin river and to some waterfall areas, before leaving again to our motel in Kanab, an old western movie town.

  21.05.05

Travel to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Again, we walked approx. one hour parallel to the Canyon and got a couple of good views downwards.

  22.05.05

After visiting the Pink Corral Dunes, we spend the day in the Bryce Canyon Area, before driving back to out home in northern Utah.

  26.05.05

As the weather improved a lot during the last days, the after work hours can be used for various short hikes. Here are some pictures of the Red Butte trail, which starts directly behind my apartment.
  27.05.05
The view of the Shoreline square from my private room.
  28.05.05
The memorial day week-end is started with a 60 miles bike trip around Park City. After climbing some hills in the Kamas area, at the edge of the Uinta mountains, I tried the shortcut back to the starting point over the steep Pine Canyon road with a 3000 feet elevation. Unfortunately the snow at the top made me go back same way, so that the round trip was longer than expected.

  30.05.05
Memorial Day - an evening trip into downtown.

  03.06.05

After work Matthias and I biked to the Ensign peak and walked up to the summit. From there, we had a very nice view on the Salt Lake valley, surrounded by mountain fronts. Even the Great Salt Lake, together with Antilope Island, are visible from the Peak. It was a bit chilly this evening, though!
  04.06.05

A three hours and estimated 55 km (1200 hm) bike tour to little and big mountain summit.

  12.06.05
Some views of Park city, where I spent some hours during daytime. In the evening, a concert was taking place at the Red Butte garden, we enjoyed it from the slopes of a nearby hill.
Scenes at a nearby hill.

  17.06.05
My new road bike, still in unassembled state.
  19.06.05

A trip to Big and Little Cootonwood Canyon, the two major canyons of Salt Lake City located at the southern part of the city area. Both of them are popular ski areas for one half of the year - altogether four resorts are located here at elevations between 2500 and 3000 meters. I was traveling with my Nissan, which made it easy to climb up the long mountain roads.

One week vacation in California (St. Cruz and San Francisco)
  25.06.2005
I took the Greyhound bus to Santa Cruz on friday night. 16 hours later, after some stops in Wendover/NV, Reno/NV, Sacramento/CA and Oakland/CA, the goal at the Pacfic coast was finally reached. My hostel was very close to the ocean (200 meters) at a small hill. After my arrival, I met a student from Stanford and we went to the pedestrian zone to get some pizza.

  26.06.2005
The town of Santa Cruz has nice beaches, some entertainment centers with rollercoasters and arcade games next to the coast and a lot of vicorian architecture. Of course, some american oldtimers can be found on the streets.

  27.06.2005
After a day on the beach I decided to walk around in the town.

  28.06.2005
The last day in Santa Cruz. After a long visit of the bookstores around the town center, I cought the bus to San Francisco. After 2 hours, I arrived in the metropole.
  29.06.2005
When walking several kilometers around the center of San Francisco, a lot of nice views can be seen. The city splits in quarters like Chinatown, the financial district, Mission, Market Street etc.

  30.06.2005
The famous Lombard street with several Uturns gives a great view.

  01.07.2005
This day I go to Sausalito, a small village on the other side of the San Francisco bay. Going there with a commuter ferry, I spend a couple of hours at this place. The clouds have a very special characteristics there, cought near the summits of the hills. A bus takes me back across the Golden Gate bridge.

  02.07.2005
The last day of my vacation. Again I walk a lot, trying to find some camera shops and doing some pre-July 4th shopping (very good rebates!). Finally, I enter the Greyhound again and go back to Utah.

  03.07.2005
Views along the trip back to Salt Lake City. One can see the big salt basins.
3D05 Conference at the University of Utah and the visitors from Germany
  04.07.2005
Stefan and Holger arrive at Salt Lake. Since the first day is public holiday (Independence day), we can use the spare time to do some hikes in the Big Cottonwood area. In the evening, we enjoy a firework.

  07.07.2005
The conference - together with some colleagues from Siemens, I use the lunch break and go to the top of big mountain summit.
  09.07.2005
A hike at the Uinta mountain area. We visit bald mountain (unfortunatley, the hike was stopped by a snow field) and the mirror lake.

  10.07.2005

Hiking Mount Timpanogos at the southern end of the Salt Lake Valley, near Provo. Again, a lot of snow stopped us from reaching the top.
  15.07.2005
Barbecueing with some of our roommates and friends in front of the apartment.
  16.07.2005
With Holger and Stefan to the Mt. Timpanogos cave.
  18.07.2005

The panorama from Ensign Peak, located near downtown.
  26.07.2005
Picknick after work on in the East Canyon area.
Weekend trip to Yellowstone NP and Grand Teton NP
  29.07.2005
On the way to the National Park.
  30.07.2005
